Spiritual Lessons From The Feast Of Tabernacles - Rod Mills
Though as Christians we are no longer commanded to celebrate the Feasts of Israel, they are vivid demonstrations of eternal realities of God. In this special teaching on the Feast of Tabernacles we discuss it’s connection to holy convocation and faith-filled generosity.

So we are in this season of the Feast of Tabernacles. And Doug and Jennifer did a great job last week with the Feast of Tabernacles teaching on it. The Lord had given me some things to share on the Feast of Tabernacles. So I wanted to wait and and share that with you. So this morning, I'd like to revisit this passage that Doug and Jennifer read to us last week. But before I do, I want to just remind us of a couple things, one, the Feast of Tabernacles. This year, it began at sundown on Monday night, the 20th of September. And I believe it goes to until sundown it goes eight days. So I think it goes until Tuesday night, if I'm not mistaken, someone could shake their head yes or no if that's correct. I'm not an expert on the Jewish feasts, although I've done a little bit of studying on them. And so anyways, but I want to remind us of something, the Feasts of Israel are vivid demonstrations of eternal realities of God there. They are demonstrations of higher reality, spiritual realities. There were demonstrations of not only those realities, but God's ways and God's truths lived out in his people, Israel. Now as Christians, to be clear, we're not commanded to keep the Feasts of Israel, we understand that we're not saying that we should live under the law, keep all the feasts do all the ceremonial law, when I say the law, I mean, the ceremonial law. But in Jesus Christ, these things and what they represent the greater higher realities that they represent. They are part of our inheritance as children of Abraham, Paul teaches us, that we are children of Abraham, by promise through Jesus Christ, and they are our inheritance to understand God, and to experience Him and His ways better, and to celebrate and practice our pursuit of God, as well. And so we can enjoy these feasts in an in a non legal fashion in that we can celebrate with Israel silho Celebrate what these things mean, in Jesus Christ, in our communion with God. With that being said, I just wanted to leave that caveat out there. So everybody understands. We're not saying you have to keep all the Feasts of Israel, like like they did. However, I'd like to read the passage again, and review a few things. And oh, by the way, let me say this, some people say, this is an issue that I don't know why this is coming up recently, in Christian dome, there are certain people's beginning to voice that, that Christians need to live by the law. And you know, it seems like this never quite goes away. But it's a kind of swelling doctrine, again, that's coming into the church in different places. And in x 21, the apostles were asked, what do the Gentiles have to do? Like? In other words, what are the Christian Gentiles? What laws do they have to obey? And so the apostles prayed about it. And this is what they said in Acts 2125. They said, But concerning the Gentiles who believe, who have written and decided that they should observe no such thing talking about ceremonial laws, except they should, for things, keep themselves from things offered to idols. Number two from blood, that means from eating or drinking blood, and from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. So there were four things four requirements the apostles felt led to place upon the Gentiles. You could say what ceremonial laws apply to the Gentiles. And they were like, well, we've prayed about it. And there's really four things that we need to say here. And so go look at that passage. That's x 2125. Now, that being said, As believers, we can enjoy the feasts of the Lord, and we can enjoy their meaning and we can enjoy their fellowship. So I'd like to read this passage again that Doug and Jennifer, I think you read it last week. I want to read from I'm from Luke I'm sorry from Leviticus 23. And it's a bit long, but bear with me here. Leviticus 2333. Then the Lord spoke to Moses saints Speak to the Children of Israel saying the 15th day of this month shall be the Feast of Tabernacles. For seven days to the Lord on the first day, there shall be a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work on it. For seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. On the eighth day, you shall have a holy convocation. And you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. It is a sacred assembly and you shall do no customary work on it. These are the feasts of the Lord which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations to offer an offering made by fire to the Lord and burn offering and a grain offering a sacrifice and drink offerings, everything on its day, besides the Sabbath of the Lord, that is, besides taking the Sabbath, He says, besides your gifts, besides all your vows, and besides all your free will offerings which you give to the Lord. So he's saying, besides all your Sabbath's, you need to take some time off here and spend time together. And besides all of your tithes and offerings, you need to give these offerings to the Lord as well. And he says also on the 15th day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruit of the land now, this is good stuff. If you've grown up on a farm, you know what this is, you shall keep the feast of the Lord for seven days. And on the first day there shall be a Sabbath rest. And on the eighth day, there shall be a Sabbath rest. And you shall take for yourselves on the first day of the fruit of the beautiful trees, branches, a palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before their Lord your God for seven days, you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord, for seven days in the year, it'll be a statute. I love this forever. He's like, just in case you're wondering how long this goes, he says, forever, in your generations, you shall celebrate it in the seventh month, you shall dwell in booths, or tabernacles for seven days. All who are native Israelites shall dwell in Booth blues, that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I am the Lord your God. So Moses declared to the children of Israel, the feasts of the Lord. Now, I want to read one other passage, bear with me, I know we're reading a lot of Scripture today. But you know, it probably good to just have services where all we did was read scripture, Deuteronomy, chapter 16, verse 13, Moses, he says, You shall observe the Feast of Tabernacles, seven days when you have gathered from your threshing floor, and from your wine press, see what's happening here? Wow, he St. You're gathering all the harvest in this is pay day. You guys know in an agrarian society, you're not paid once a month, or twice a month in an agrarian society. You're paid once a year. And this is the pay. This is where the increase comes, both in the harvest and in the wine press. That is the harvest of the of the grapes as well. And he says, And you shall rejoice in your feast. Now this is interesting hear, God doesn't just allow them to rejoice in the bounty of His provision. He commands them to rejoice. I like that. He says, and you and your son and your daughter, your male servant, your female servant. In other words, he's saying all your employees, everybody works for you. He goes in the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, the widow, who within your gates he saying, this is not just for you or your family. This is for everybody shall rejoice, everybody shall rejoice in the increase. Seven days you shall keep a sacred feast to the Lord your God and the place which the Lord chooses, because the Lord your God will bless you and all your produce. He will bless you and all the work of your hands, and you shall surely rejoice. This is what I call God happiness right here. This is a time when God is saying, I'm going to pour out My blessings. And I'm going to I'm calling you into all kinds of God happiness. Now, if you do a search in the lexicon on Joy in the New Testament, and I think it's this way, in the Old Testament, the translation is a divine happiness. It's not just some people say, well, joy is not happiness. Actually, happiness, in the lexicon of studying the language is a subset of happiness of Joy, Joy is a fullness of divine happiness. It's a it's a joy, and a fullness of joy and rejoicing and happiness that comes from God Himself. But when God gives it, he doesn't say, Well, I'm not going to bless all these things, you just be happy with this, he literally comes to us and says, I'm going to bless you across the board. And I want you to rejoice in it, and then have a Sabbath and have a convocation, and then give special offerings and sacrificial offerings, all these things, because I've been good to you, you also be good to my house. And so that's just kind of the essence of that. It is the this is the seventh and the final feast of Israel in the year. In Christianity, some will draw this parallel that it represents the marriage supper of the Lamb. When we come together with Jesus, there's also there have also been parallels between this this Feast of Tabernacles and the Lord's Supper, the communion, because communion is a coming together to celebrate not only his presence among us, but also to celebrate that day when we will join together. But number one, if you if you're writing notes, it's a time of celebration of God's blessing. That's number one. It's a time of celebration of God's blessing of God's bounty, and of God's faithfulness over the past year. Some people believe that the early Americans that started Thanksgiving had this feast in mind when they began it, and not that they were trying to observe this feast, but they were trying to do something in the same spirit. This feast begins five days after Yom Kippur, which is the Day of Atonement. So isn't this interesting that it is a time to give thanks because our sins have been forgiven. We are giving thanks right after whenever there was once a year in Israel, when the Day of Atonement in the high priest would go in and atone for the sins of the people in the Holy of Holies. And, of course, we know that our sins have been atone for in Jesus. But God calls us to set aside special times as families and of spiritual family to be thankful for His atoning of our sins. But isn't it cool that he did it in a time when we're not only given thinks that our sins have been forgiven, but we're giving thanks for all these blessings that God has given us over the past year. And he says not only the harvest from the food, but also the harvest from the wine press, all of the increase. Now, if you've had a chance to do that, this week, that's great. If you haven't, I want to encourage you as a family, to take time at the meal and maybe even today, around the meal as a spiritual family, to take time to give thanks to the Lord, for His goodness to us over this past year. God has been good to our spiritual family, guys, listen, we have fought COVID We have been in all kinds of jobs, situations and living situations. Yet God has blessed every one of our families, every single one, he has blessed us he's brought us through fire. He's brought us through challenge. He's brought us through all kinds of things, to demonstrate his faithfulness. And I want to just say, as your brother in the Lord, and as a spiritual father in this house, God has been good to us. Many of you, I'll tell you, Kiyomi and, and Herbert, when we look back over the past four or five years that we've been together with you guys, and as we're sending you out this week, I look back over our families, and I say look, where we were, spiritually, look where we were, physically, look, where we were financially, look, where, where we were relationally look where we were in our marriages five or six years ago, four years ago, and look where we are now. God is calling our attention to his blessing and His presence and His faithfulness to us. Not so we can just consume our blessing. But so we can launch out and experience the seven fold increase in the next generation of blessings that are about to come. I want to, I want to so the blessings God's given me in this generation of blessings, because every generation of harvest is 1000s of times greater than the previous generation. You know, you could take one kernel of blessing one kernel of corn that God blessed you with, but if you sow it, you're gonna get ears and ears of corn with you know, hundreds, maybe 1000s of kernels. If you so it. And so some people they blame they they enjoy a generation of blessing. And then the next generation of blessing comes and they so that and then about the third her generation of blessing. They're like, Oh, I'm really enjoying this and they start eating their seed corn, don't eat your seed corn. And we're talking about all kinds of things. We're talking about our time, our energy, our money, our friendships, our relationships, don't eat your seed corn, let's sew it back in. And so in this season, what I found is whenever I take time to say, Lord, I look back seven years ago, and the doctor said, my life was over. When I think about that, when I sit, I was just rehearsing these words to the Lord this morning and talking about it. And something in your heart comes from the Holy Spirit. And he's like, let's go, let's go to the next level. Let's let's go out now. And let's do the bigger stuff, you know, kind of like the Lord's like, he's always cheering us on to the next level. And God, the enemy doesn't want you to have that next generation of blessing, because it's 1000s of times greater than the previous generation, each time, the nature of the kingdom is every generation of blessing multiplies on extraordinary levels. Number two, the the Feast of Tabernacles, or it's also called the Feast of Ingathering, by the way, because of the harvest number two, it's a time of sacrificial offerings. On top of all the other tithes, offerings and gifts. These two offerings are expressions of deep gratitude to the Lord, for his faithfulness in the harvest that year, and his faithfulness to Israel when they lived in tabernacles, coming out of Egypt. So when we set aside seasons of generosity toward God, we become more generous to him all year long. And Beth and I just went through a season where we were praying about, Lord, we just want to give an extra offering. And we were praying, you know how much and all of this, but part of this is just because we want to say, Lord, thank you for how blessed you have been blessed much you have blessed us, and we want to bless you. We want to bless your house, we want to bless your people. And it is a time to really, to be intentional in our generosity. But what I love about this is He sets us on a course of generosity. Have you noticed that when you set aside time to pray, you pray more all the time, like when I set aside time to pray, and I have my prayer time every every morning, what I find is that my conversation with God is more active all day long. I found the same thing about giving, I've found the same thing about sacrifice. I've found the same thing about ministry. If I am intentional, to encourage people to bless people to do then what I find is is that when I'm intentional about it at certain times, then the rest of the time in my life, I'm doing the same thing. I'm following suit after that. And so that's one of the beauties of of the this harvest time. Thanksgiving is when we are thankful we're intentionally grateful to God, during seasons of like the Feast of Tabernacles or the or Thanksgiving season in November, then we end out having a thankful heart much more than we would if we were not intentional. Number three, it is a time of holy convocation. And the first in the last days. I love how they they put these bumpers on the front and back. God put these bumpers on it is like, okay, when you come together, it's a holy convocation. When you finish these seven days, on the eighth day, it's a holy convocation. And not only is it a holy convocation, it's a Sabbath. So you guys know the Sabbath starts at sundown on Friday night and goes to Saturday night in Israel. But then, on Monday night, they started another Sabbath, a holy convocation. And what I like to call a season of Sabbath even though all of the days weren't called Sabbath, because legally, that meant a lot for them. It is a season of Sabbath thing. It is a season of retreat. It's a season of fellowship, it's a season of coming together, eating together celebrating. Now, I don't know, I think I do know about you guys, but I wanted to say I don't know about you guys, but isn't it cool? How God will say he won't say, Okay, guys, everybody come together for a two hour church service and be grateful and say Thanksgiving, and all of that. I love how God does this. He goes, Oh, let's do this in style. Let's have a whole day of Sabbath and convocation. Let's have a whole week of feasting, and let's have another Sabbath and let's all get together in a convocation at the end so that we can celebrate the goodness of God for an entire week. We're Just feasting and fellowshipping and spending time with one another and with the Lord. I love that about God. He doesn't just have us check blocks. God says we don't do check block kind of family reunions here. We're going to get together, and we're going to feast for seven days. And then if you're wondering how he is on this, this is the seven feast guys. This is seven times a year of feasting. And this is how they lived their whole lives. They lived seven feasts a year. Man, you've got to work hard, just so you don't gain weight. You're doing seven feasts a year. Can you believe that? I mean, we have Thanksgiving for a day and we're stuffed we cook a turkey. Can you imagine having a whole week of Thanksgivings. And then having seven of those feasts every year of feasting and and different things that we're celebrating, and experiencing and God, wow. Suddenly, I'm thinking man, God's really different than Americans are? No, he's all about the feasting and the relationships and the celebration, and a culture of, of stopping your work and taking time to love Him and to love the people around you. And there's a lot more in this, but it's a time of holy complication on the front end and the back end. And complication means calling and coming together. It's a call for all of the people of God to come together with God. And Doug and Jennifer have been doing a lot with convocation as families. And I think they have a lot to teach the rest of us about how we can bring our families into convocation like this, not talking about the Feast of Tabernacles. Now I'm talking about just the concept of convocation, and coming together with God and with one another, to be intentional in our connection, worship and thanksgiving to him. Number four, it's a time of faith, looking forward. Now the souk is, you know, they're like, camping forts. And I was reading on this. And I thought, you know, if you're, if you're a young boy, growing up in Israel, you had to love the Feast of Tabernacles. Because the this way I look at the Feast of Tabernacles is a is one week a year, when families go outside and build these forts and live in them for an entire week. And if you're a boy growing up in Israel, you're like, man, we get to build forts with dad and mom and live outside. And it's got to be cool. As a young boy growing up, because you're living in these forts. Well, in those forts, you guys know, they would put the limbs on the top. But the way the design of them was commanded was so they could still see through the limbs, and see the stars. And the idea of the sukkah was for them to be able to look into eternity, and see that this temporary dwelling that we are in is very temporary. And as we look to the stars, we remember the promise of God and the covenant with Abraham, that he would multiply his seed like the stars of the heavens. And this is more about eternity. It's about seeing beyond this life, and its temporal nature, so that we remember that although we're in, we're in tabernacles. Now, although we live in this temporary dwelling, Doug and Jennifer read the passage from Corinthians last week, talking about this, that when we look through the ceiling of the sukkah, we see the stars we see the heavens, we're reminded of eternity, we're reminded that we are people who are designed and made by God to live forever. Let us live like this. Now, don't forget that we are not created by God, to be people who will die. We are created by God, as eternal beings, God created us to live eternally. What this is extraordinary. And we can remember that in the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. Every time we look through the roof and see the stars. Do you guys love this? Can I get an amen out there? Yeah. All the thumbs up. Amen. I just I love this. This is awesome. All right, let me dig my notes up here number number one, oh, let me let me cover one more thing. And number four, I might have my numbers off. The last day of the Feast of Tabernacles is called The Day of great Hosanna. And during this time, the people of God would pray for rain and they would pray for God's salvation through the Messiah. So this was Not just a time of thanksgiving on the last day of the feasting period, they would come together, and they would pray for rain. Now, you know, in an agrarian society, rain is how you get paid. Like that's how the rain is the blessing of God that makes the crops grow, that helps you have a great increase. It literally is prayer for divine favor, so that they could physically financially and in the natural be blessed. And so rain had a very big significance. They were praying for physical rain, but they were also praying for God's blessing and His richness upon them. And so when I say this is a time of looking forward, it's not only a time of looking forward through the ceiling of the sukkah, but it's also a time of praying for rain in the last day. So I want to encourage us to do this. Just be intentional. When we come into the last day of this season. Gather your family together and pray for rain. Gather your family together and pray for blessing. Pray for blessing on your jobs, pray for blessing on our homes, pray for blessing on everything we touch that it will be blessed by the hand of God. And that's what that's the equivalent of praying for rain. We're praying for God's blessing and His outpouring. And I'll tell you guys, I know the Lord will hear us, He will hear us pray for rain, pray for God's blessing in all the areas that he gives you a freedom and a release to pray over. Number five, it's a time of rejoicing. And I mentioned this when we were reading the Scripture, God's command is for this to be a time of great happiness, of great rejoicing. Have you guys noticed that whenever you start thanking God, for what he's done in the past season, and you start naming the things he's done, and you start naming the miraculous breakthroughs you got and you start naming the the multiplication of blessings. Your faith starts to grow. You're like, wait a minute, man. Man, I believe a lot more than I thought I did. And your faith increases. And then it culminates on the eighth day of this fasting on the last day of convocation. And everybody's faith is strong, because they see what God has done. And then we reach out and we pray for rain. But then number five is there's a great rejoicing, there's like extraordinary joy and happiness. When I look back on God's blessing on my life, man, I'm like, This is awesome, God, you are awesome. And I love the ways of the Lord, because he is good. And God's goodness is drawing us into His ways into his heart, into His Holiness, into a fear of the Lord that's healthy and strong and Reverend, understanding that we are talking about a relationship with the Creator with the king of all things. And that's both beautiful and scary at the same time, because of who he is. And so this time of rejoicing is not an option. God didn't say, well, and if you feel like it Newsome rejoicing, he commanded us to be thankful, and to feast and then he goes, and here's my command, you shall Rejoice greatly, you will Rejoice greatly. In other words, you're going to have God happiness all over the place in your family, you're going to have God happiness in your joy, in your, in your relationships in your household and your spiritual family. And so Lord, we want your god happiness in us this rejoicing that comes from extraordinary blessing. And now, I just want to speak prophetically because I feel a release to do it. And say that we are entering you guys know, after the retreat, we begin to enter a new season. And in this season, I believe many, many families are going to enter into some of the greatest blessing they've ever lived in before. And I want us to take hold of that. This is not for our selfishness, please. Jesus said, You remember when Jesus said, Don't pray that you have this just so you can consume it upon your loss. Remember, he's, he calls us to ask him to reach into these realms, so that we can pursue Him and His Kingdom and His interests. And I was in prayer this morning, early. And and I just felt the Lord and I wasn't studying this or anything. I was just in prayer, didn't have any books open or anything. I'm just praying, drinking coffee, it's dark and early. And the Lord just puts his finger on someone. And he said, Look at my servant, and he called out the name of someone I know. And he goes, Look at his heart. I want you to know how I feel about him. And I tell you, I was so moved even now the tears started swelling my eyes, because the Lord showed me a man who turned down, he could be a multimillionaire today. And he turned down certain things not because he just wanted to do it, but because God's called him to something. And he went and applied his whole heart to the ministry God's called him to. And today, he doesn't have near what he could have. And the Lord was showing me his heart and how he feels about this man, and his dedication to him. And it just touched me deeply because I could feel it touching the Lord's heart. Now, God doesn't call us to just go out and say, well, I'll just sacrifice because I want to go do this, this man did this, because God called him into this work. And so he sacrificed and gave up much to go into that. But I'll tell you that whenever I saw that, it moved my heart deeply. And I said, God, I want to live like that. And the Lord's not saying, hey, go figure out how much you can give up. For me, that's not the way God works. That's not his heart. What he does is he says, Hey, set your heart this direction. This is my calling on your life. And for me, I want to say it is a great joy for me to love each of you and your families, and to serve you. And someone asked me one of my colleagues that hasn't retired yet. He said, You know, he was asking me about, you know, different job offerings, and he's worried about jobs, I guess, after he retires. But he was like, Well, what, you know, why didn't you take this big church, you know, and this other job that is offered, and all of this, and I'm like, it's not God's calling on my life, my joy is to do the will of the Father. And sometimes we get caught up and what impresses man, what does impress people, don't worry about that. Worry about impressing God. This is a this is a lifestyle of great rejoicing. And I want to say what an honor and a blessing it is for me to love you, and to serve you, and then to go together to the nations of the earth and to serve and love God's people whose hearts are toward him. And I am so blessed. In fact, I got a testimony to share. I don't think we'll share it today. But there's just some cool things happening this week. Have some people we've been ministering to over the years, and I want to share that probably in prayer Council, I'll share it. But revival fires are just flowing in all these places. And you know, God shows us he goes, Hey, if you will start a revival, fire, just light a little match and this hardness, hardness place. And pretty soon the whole forest will be on fire. This is a good forest fire, not a bad forest fire, a whole spiritual forest will be on fire and hearts will be coming to the Lord. And the Lord says it doesn't have to be hard. It just has to be faithful and obedient to me. It doesn't have to be big in man's book to be big. It has to be big in God's book, and big and God's book is what is he calling you to do? Give your heart to those people to that way to that spiritual family. And you will never ever regret it. This fifth one, it's a time of great rejoicing. I'll tell you guys, you know this, I say this a lot. There is no better place than the will of God. There is no better place you will ever be than the will of God and pursue his will. And be intentional. Let's be intentional as a spiritual family, to be thankful and to rejoice because right now we're in a harvest season, and we're entering a new season. In this new season, we're going into let's covenant in our hearts together to be faithful with all of the talents God has put within us. Some of us started out with one talent and we made two. Some of us then had two talents. And we made for some of us, some of folks among us have made eight talents or 10 talents. I'll tell you, I don't want to bury one of them. I want to use them all I want to dedicate them all to his ways and to his heart. And what a joy it is for us to journey together. And to do this together. This season we are in is a profound time to be alive. Don't let the cheerleaders of darkness discourage you. Don't let the naysayers don't let the evil doers the Scripture tells us again and again. Don't fret because of these evil doers. And they're trying to say all this bad stuff. And in all of this, don't fear tribulation, don't fear the tribulation. We are living in the greatest time to be alive and God has thought it enough to honor us with the blessing to be alive in this hour on the earth. This is our time. This is our calling. This is our season and I want to declare by faith that we will be faithful in the time in which we are called. And we as a people will be faithful in all of God's house. And my prayer for us is that when we stand before the Lord, that He says to each one of you, each of us, well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a little, I will make you ruler over much. This is my prayer for each of us. And I'll tell you with all my heart, I believe God's going to fulfill that prayer. Those are the best words we can ever hear on day one from Jesus, or in the judgment from Jesus and night, my prayer is that we will hear those words. Now I'd like to do this, let's say a prayer, there's a lot more we could share on this feast. But that's a good primer for us to be praying and thinking over. And many of you are going to have much more revelation than that. And you'll be sharing on this far beyond what I've shared today. But hopefully, this will be a good primer to get us started more and more. Let's pray, Lord, we want to thank you that we are living in the greatest time to be alive that you've called us to, we want to thank you that we are living in a season of harvest. As I look out over all of the various families, I see a blessed people. I see people who have been blessed, sometimes 2345 or 10 times more than they were the day I met them. And I just want to say thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I say thank you for hearts that are dedicated to you, families that are completely on the altar, families that are completely given to your people, wherever you call us. Whatever nation you call us to. I thank you that as I look out, I see families who will do anything, ever, I just see people who will give their lives day and night for you and for your people. I see people who are good to your house and to your people and to your ways. And Lord, I pray that each and every family you will multiply these blessings. And Lord, we say Help us not to eat the seed corn, but to be faithful in this next season, to multiply this fruit 1000 times even more than that.
